Previously used Designs

This section is not intended to lay claim to any designs, or to stifle your creativity by stating that you cannot re-do a design that has already been done, indeed it is perfectly acceptable to continue to decorate Marty in the same way every year. Don’t feel that I, or anyone else is going to get upset if you re-use an idea, no one is going to initiate any sort of RIAA-esque man hunt, imitation is the surest form of flattery. Almost every senior class decorates him as a Christmas tree each year - I think it has to do with all of the extra time on students hands, and the fact that he just looks SO GOOD as a Christmas tree.

This page is here to help stimulate your ideas - so that you can see what has happened previously, and improve upon previous years, or be inspired to do your own thing.

Many previous classes have dressed Marty up as a Christmas tree.

During a time of construction and renovation around “the institution” Marty was dressed in a blaze orange vest and a yellow hard hat with a sign in front that read “Caution: Under Reformation.” Very slick. Unfortunately I only have a picture of the sign, but the vest and hat were quite nice.

I have seen Marty in a variety of stoles, of course the colors are appropriate to the season. This is always a nice touch and a way to celebrate an anniversary of an ordination, or of any other festival actually.

My graduating class and I have had a hand in:

A Christmas tree-ing. Ours - in all due modesty - was the best that has been seen previously. Lots of lights, a star on top, and decorations. Usually Marty only gets a few strands of lights. We did him up right.

We did the Cherub at Valentines day, including a bow and arrow, a diaper, and wings.

The Easter bunny was also very nice, including Ears, Whiskers, and a bunny tail. I wanted to do cuffs and a bow tie too, but others in my class thought that was going too far… they are probably right.

For May Day we dressed Marty up as a May Pole - which proved to be SUPRISINGLY effective, and difficult… though I would do it again in a second. Especially considering that we managed to get people to dance around the Luther Pole. Sweet.

Finally for the beginning of Summer we dressed Marty up as a beach bum - Big hat, sunglasses, Bikini top, and an inner tube - to say nothing of the pink flamingos. The inner tube took all night to get on him - and it never did look quite right. Live and learn. This outfit was the only one that maintenance ever took down. It was taken down after about 2 days, apparently someone thought the “cross dressing” might be offensive. Others just thought it was funny.

Classes after mine have dressed Marty up as an ancient Greek, in order to “celebrate” the beginning of summer Greek classes here at the seminary. This outfit was well thought out, it involved a laurel wreath, and a toga. The laurel looked good, but the Toga was not well executed - I think it suffered from some of the same problems that the inner-tube did.

I have heard suggestions for the 4th of July involving rockets, beards and top hats… All excellent ideas, but I have not seen them come to fruition - and wonder how well a patriotic Luther might go over with the administration.

If you have fresh ideas that you have seen and would like to have pictured here - please let me know… I am happy to add them.
